Mace & Crown
Editorial Design
Old Dominion University's Fall 2023 edition of the student magazine, titled the 'Mace & Crown.' Every semester, we produce a magazine written by - and for - the students of Old Dominion University. As the graphic designer, I was in charge of layout, typography, and editing of photos.
Grid System.
This editorial employs a grid system with 6 rows and 6 columns. The grid is tailored to margins of 0.5624 at the top and inside, and 0.75 inches at the bottom and outside. The gutter measurement for both rows and columns is set at 0.1667 inches.
Type Studies.
In previous years at Mace & Crown, former graphic designers infused each article in the magazine with individuality by employing various colors, typefaces, and photo treatments. However, this approach led to a lack of consistency in the magazine's overall appearance. During the past semester, I took the initiative to conduct type studies, aiming to address this issues and establish a cohesive voice for the magazine.
Variations.
Here is an example of article layouts being modified to meet the needs of section editors. The top row illustrates the adjustment of an article being two spreads and altered to one spread, while the bottom row shows changes in photos as requested by the News Section Editor.
